As we step into a brand-new year, it’s a perfect moment to look back on 2024 – a year filled with milestones, challenges, and countless lessons that shaped our journey. In this review, we’ll highlight some key takeaways, celebrate our accomplishments, and share what the upcoming year has in store for us.
WHAT WE LEARNED IN 2024
If you’ve been following us for a while, you’ll know taking time to reflect is a big personal and professional practice for me. I find this practice so valuable to guide ongoing growth and learning. So what are some of the lessons I’ve learnt, looking back on the previous year?
- Hard work beats entitlement
One of the biggest lessons this year was realising just how destructive entitlement can be. In an industry like carpentry, success isn’t handed out, it’s earned through effort, perseverance, and the right attitude. I had a few run-ins with people who expected results without putting in the work, and it was a stark reminder that skill can be taught, but mindset is everything. Those willing to roll up their sleeves, stay humble, and continuously learn will always outperform those who think they’re owed something. It’s a simple truth, but one that underpins our approach as a team: no one owes you success, you have to earn it. - Overcoming burnout
The first half of 2024 was one of the toughest periods I’ve faced. Juggling business demands, external pressures, and training for my first Half Ironman left me completely drained, mentally and physically. There were moments of frustration, irrational outbursts, and a lack of balance in my life. Hitting rock bottom forced me to reevaluate everything. I realised I needed to stop overcommitting, prioritise rest and recovery, and make internal changes to regain control. Reflecting on this now, I’m proud of myself for making the necessary changes and finishing off the year in a much better headspace. - No risk, no reward
Hiring Steve, our first full-time Project Manager, was a big leap of faith. I had countless questions running through my mind – could we afford it, and would it pay off? Reflecting now, it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made. Steve has taken so much pressure off me and brought a level of support and organisation that’s transformed how we operate. He’s been instrumental in strengthening our team, enhancing client relationships, and ensuring smoother communication across the board. His presence has allowed me to focus on strategy, estimating, and improving our processes, and I can’t imagine the business without him now.
OUR WINS IN 2024
While there were definitely some big lessons and low moments in 2024, looking back on the year, we also have much to celebrate. By acknowledging and celebrating our wins, we can help reinforce the motivation that will carry us through to the next achievement. So what are some of our celebrations from 2024?
- Completed three projects with three very happy clients
This year, we wrapped up three major projects: Sorrento Rd, Butternut Ave, and Charlton St. Each one came with its own challenges, but what stands out the most is the incredible feedback from our clients. Hearing their gratitude and seeing the pride in our Site Managers, Rich, Remy, and Luke, made it all worthwhile. These projects are a testament to the talent and dedication of our team, and I couldn’t be prouder of what we delivered. - Another win at the MBA Awards
Winning the Energy Efficiency & Environmental Sustainability award for Lurline House at the MBA Newcastle Excellence in Building Awards was another highlight. This was our fourth entry in this category and our fourth win, which feels like a validation of our commitment to building high-performing, sustainable homes. It’s always exciting to have our efforts recognised by industry peers, and it motivates us to keep pushing boundaries in sustainable building practices. - A big personal achievement ticked off
Completing my first Half Ironman was a massive personal milestone. The lead-up wasn’t easy, balancing two training sessions a day with running a business, and the event itself tested me mentally and physically. Crossing the finish line, however, was an incredible feeling. While I didn’t clock the time I’d hoped for, I’m proud to have followed through on a goal I set for myself. It’s a reminder that we’re often our own toughest critics, and sometimes just finishing the race is enough. The experience has inspired me to take on a new challenge – mastering Jiu-Jitsu in 2025. - Ahara House winning ‘Australia’s Best Coastal Retreat’
We were equally shocked and stoked to see one of our projects, Ahara House, not only selected to feature on Season 3 of Australia’s Best House, but also be selected by the judges as the winner of the ‘Coastal Retreat’ category! Ahara House was a personal development with one of my best mates, Chippy. It’s an award winning project, and it’s been great to have been recognised for some of the hard work that goes into designing, planning and building a project like this. - Stepping out of my comfort zone
This year, I pushed myself in ways I never expected. Being featured in Central Coast Life & Style magazine’s Game Changers edition was a huge honour, and seeing my face on the cover in local cafes was a surreal experience. Speaking at the magazine’s launch event and later appearing on the Behind the Design podcast pushed me out of my comfort zone but showed me that I do have valuable insights to share. These opportunities have encouraged me to put myself and the business out there more, and I’m excited to continue building those connections. - Continuing to nurture and build the dream team
Our team is stronger than ever, and I couldn’t be prouder. After some initial movement earlier in the year, we’ve built a dynamic, high-performing group that consistently exceeds expectations. Clients, contractors, and suppliers often comment on how much they enjoy working with us, and that feedback means everything. I see the commitment and value the team brings to Lou Projects, and I want to make sure I continue to nurture that and show it’s appreciated. We’ve had a couple of great team building days this year, including another successful team development day with Dan Ballard, and an epic end of year celebration at Urbnsurf. Keeping our team happy and motivated will always be a top priority for me.
OUR VISION FOR 2025 AND BEYOND
We’re heading into 2025 with clear goals and excitement for what lies ahead.
- Major projects
This year, we’ll see the completion of our first CLT PassivHaus – a groundbreaking project that’s been a joy to work on with amazing clients and the talented team at Alexander Symes Architect. We’re also kicking off exciting new builds in Mosman, Terrigal, Lake Macquarie, and Scone, each offering unique challenges and opportunities to showcase our expertise. These projects reflect our growing presence across the Central Coast, Sydney, Newcastle and beyond. - Expanding the Lou Engagement Model
Our upcoming projects are all projects we’ve worked on through our new consulting service, the Lou Engagement Model (LEM), which we’ll continue to offer and focus on in the year ahead. By fostering collaboration between clients, designers, and builders from the start, we’ve been able to align expectations and ensure smooth project delivery. In 2025, we’ll continue to refine and expand this service, making it accessible to even more clients. - Lou Homes offering
I’m excited to see some of our pre-designed homes come to life this year. Lou Homes represents an opportunity to provide high-quality, beautifully designed homes with efficiency and affordability in mind. This offering will allow us to reach a broader audience while maintaining our commitment to quality and performance. - Adding value to the industry
Sharing knowledge and insights has always been important to me, and this year I’m doubling down. From regular project updates to more podcast appearances (and maybe even launching my own), I want to contribute to the building community in meaningful ways. If you’ve enjoyed our content so far, stay tuned – there’s more to come in 2025.
Finally, I want to thank everyone who made 2024 such a memorable year – clients, team members, subcontractors, and suppliers. Your support and collaboration have been invaluable, and I can’t wait to see what we achieve together in 2025!
